Exotica

exoticaATASDA's 35th Anniversary Exhibition, 2009
Flamboyant, frivolous, vibrant, eye-catching, colourful and exotic artworks.

Exotica travelled to Perth, Sydney, Hobart, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Adelaide as part of the Expertise Events 2009 Craft & Quilt Fairs.

ATASDA members were offered three separate opportunities - Bugs & Botanica, Cartouche and Masks, Hats & Headdresses - to create exciting & original artwork(s), drawing from an extensive range of materials and techniques, experimenting and exploring, inspired by the theme Exotica.

The exhibition was hugely popular with visitors to the Fair.

Every corner was filled with colour and interest, displaying a huge array of textile techniques and the highly developed skills of ATASDA members.

Bugs & Botanica

Bugs & Botanica were the product of "round robins" of members, in groups of four.

Remaining within the overall theme of the exhibition, each group member created a vine and the first creature or flower on it. Each group member then created another feature item, responding to the individual collection.

Cartouche

Cartouche, 'tablet' style artwork panels suitable for wall mounting in 'portrait' style were the second format created by members. Each individual original artwork was decorated, embellished and themed to create an exciting display of Exotica.

Masks, Hats & Headresses

Masks, Hats & Headdresses, individual expressions of wearable style & creativity, completed the exhibition.

Members were encouraged to let their imagination & creativity run wild... fantastic feathers, fur or felt, frivolous fringes, frills & pompoms, tassels, sequins & beads on embossed & embellished elaborate leather, fabric or paper creations of 'wearable art' masks, hats & headdresses.
